Participatory Art Wall

PARTICIPATORY ART WALL

While I was working as an intern in the Sam Fox School’s Office for Socially Engaged Practice, Candy Chang, a public participatory artist, came to speak at Wash U.

My co-worker, Lyle, and I were inspired by Candy and her work and set out to create a participatory art piece on our own campus for our community to reflect collectively about our city.

The Gephardt institute wrote about us, check it out to learn more about our process.

Our supervisor, Liz, caught Lyle and I embracing in a very triumphant high five once we were done.

Lyle and I wanted to give other clubs the opportunity to spark dialogue using the chalk wall. We partnered with two clubs in the art school—NOMAS (National Organization of Minority Architects) and WIAD (Women in Architecture and Design) and let them come up with their own prompts for the wall. Each prompt was up for 2 weeks.

NOMAS’s prompt used an interactive map of St. Louis to see how our Wash U community interacts and experiences the St. Louis city.

WIAD’s prompt read “I want to design in a world where” and “I want my creative work to affect.”
